InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today announced that the company has joined NYU WIRELESS as an Industrial Affiliate. The company joins National Instruments (NASDAQ: NATI) and Samsung as members of the new research center that was announced in August.
Founded by New York University and Tandon School of Engineering (NYU-Tandon), NYU WIRELESS is the world’s first academic research center of its kind, combining the exploration of advanced wireless technologies, computing and medical applications.
“NYU WIRELESS is doing ground-breaking research into various areas, including 5G and millimeter wave technology, that are central to InterDigital’s own research efforts, and we’re pleased to extend our longstanding support of NYU-Tandon to this new academic center,” said Jim Nolan, Executive Vice President of Research and Development at InterDigital.
NYU WIRELESS is founded and directed by Professor Theodore (Ted) S. Rappaport, who recently joined the faculty of NYU-Tandon’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center. Faculty and students from all three schools comprise NYU WIRELESS. Rappaport previously founded major academic wireless centers, at Virginia Tech and The University of Texas, as well as two companies that made significant contributions to the cellular industry.
“InterDigital has a long history of pioneering innovations in core wireless technologies, and has helped shape the world of cellular communications. It’s a tremendous honor for NYU WIRELESS to add InterDigital to our rapidly expanding list of Industrial Affiliate sponsors, and to count on their support, research input, and guidance on our Industrial Affiliates board going forward,” said Dr. Rappaport.
